Garage Door Opener Repair and Replacement
When the door slides smoothly by hand but the opener, remote or keypad misbehaves, the problem is often in the controls, sensors or power. Some of it you can check yourself; some needs a technician.
Common opener and remote symptoms
- The remote or keypad stopped working, or works only up close.
- The door reverses before it closes, or the opener lights blink.
- The opener hums or runs but the door does not move.
- The opener works from the wall button but not the remote.
- Grinding or unusual noise from the opener.
What an inspection looks at
- Remotes, keypads and their batteries and programming.
- Safety sensors: alignment, wiring and lens condition.
- Power supply to the opener.
- The motor, drive and travel limits.
- The door's balance, because an opener should not be doing the work of a failed spring.
Brands we work with: Chamberlain, Clopay, LiftMaster, Genie.
Repair or replace the opener?
Weighing the options
Repairing an opener often makes sense when the problem is a remote, sensor or a single part. Replacement is worth discussing when parts are hard to find, the repair cost is close to the cost of a new unit, or the unit lacks safety features that newer openers include, such as photo-eye sensors.
Check the door first
If the door is heavy or unbalanced, the opener will strain and may fail early. Part of the inspection is making sure the door itself is in good shape.
What affects the price
- Whether the fix is a remote, sensor, wiring or a motor part.
- The age and model of the opener and whether parts are available.
- Whether the door also needs work.
- Whether replacement is more sensible than repair.

Questions about openers
My remote stopped working. Is the opener broken?
Not necessarily. Batteries, programming and sensor problems can look the same. Replace the remote batteries first.
Why does the door reverse before closing?
Often the safety sensors are dirty, misaligned or blocked. Clear the doorway and wipe the sensor lenses. If it continues, have it checked. Never bypass the sensors.
Can an opener lift a door with a broken spring?
It is not designed to, and trying can damage the opener. Stop and call.
Should I replace my opener?
It depends on age, parts and repair cost. A technician can tell you the options for your unit.
