Find your symptom
These descriptions explain what you may be seeing and what often causes it. They are not a diagnosis; more than one cause can look the same from the driveway.
Door will not open
- What you may notice
- The opener hums or runs but the door stays down, the door lifts only a few inches, or nothing happens at all.
- Possible causes
- A broken spring, a remote or wall control problem, no power to the opener, a disconnected opener carriage, a lock still engaged, or hardware that has jammed.
- What you can safely do
- Check that the opener has power and that the wall button and remote batteries work. Make sure nothing is blocking the door and any manual lock is released. If the motor runs but the door does not move, or the door feels extremely heavy, stop and have it inspected. Do not force it.
Door will not close
- What you may notice
- The door starts down and reverses, stops partway, or the opener lights blink and it will not move.
- Possible causes
- Safety sensors that are dirty or misaligned, something blocking the doorway, travel limits that need adjustment, a bent track or an unbalanced door.
- What you can safely do
- Clear the doorway and gently wipe the safety sensor lenses at the bottom of each side. Never bypass or disable the safety sensors. If the door reverses with nothing in the way or looks uneven, have it inspected.
Crooked or off-track door
- What you may notice
- One side hangs lower, the door looks bowed, a roller has popped out of the track, or the track itself looks bent.
- Possible causes
- A roller or cable that failed, a bent or loose track, impact from a vehicle, or worn hardware.
- What to do now
- Stop using the opener, keep people and vehicles clear, and do not try to push or lift the door back into place. An off-track door can fall and the parts involved are under tension. Have it assessed by a professional.
Noisy operation
- What you may notice
- Squeaking, grinding, rattling, popping, or a door that shakes as it moves.
- Possible causes
- Worn rollers or hinges, loose hardware, hardware that needs lubrication, springs under strain, or a worn opener drive. Some noises are minor; others warn of wear.
- What you can safely do
- Note when the noise happens (opening, closing, or both) and describe it when you call. Stop using the door if you hear loud bangs, see fraying cable or notice the door moving unevenly.
Suspected broken spring
A loud bang from the garage, a door that feels very heavy, or a visible gap in a spring above the door are common signs. See the page on spring repair.
Opener or remote issue
If the door itself moves freely but the remote, keypad or opener misbehaves, see opener and remote repair.
Other repairs
- Routine maintenance. Regular checks can catch worn rollers, loose hardware or a failing spring before the door stops working. Ask what a maintenance visit includes and what it costs when you call or send a request.
- Cables and rollers. Frayed or slack cables and rollers that wobble or squeal are signs of wear. Cables are under tension, so a worn one is a reason to stop using the door and call a professional.
- Dented or cracked panels. Whether a damaged panel can be repaired or replaced, or whether the whole door should be replaced, depends on the door model and how badly it is damaged. A technician can tell you which options exist for your door.
Common signs something needs attention
- The door opens or closes unevenly, or one side hangs lower.
- The door is much heavier than usual to move by hand or strains the opener.
- New noises such as grinding, popping or scraping.
- The door reverses or stops before it closes.
- Visible fraying, gaps, bent metal or loose hardware.
Safety first. A heavy or damaged door can drop without warning, and springs and cables are under high tension. If a door looks bent, hangs crooked or has come off its track, keep people and vehicles clear and have it assessed by a professional. Do not try to lift it or adjust springs or cables yourself.
What an inspection looks at
- Door balance and how it moves through its full travel.
- Springs, cables, rollers, hinges and tracks for wear and damage.
- The opener, its limits and force settings, and the safety sensors.
- Panels, weatherstripping and mounting hardware.
Repair or replace?
When repair makes sense
Many problems come down to a single worn or failed part, and replacing it can bring the door back to normal operation.
When replacement is worth discussing
If panels are badly damaged, several major parts are worn at once, or the door cannot be repaired to a safe condition, a technician may suggest replacing the door. You decide after seeing the quote.
What affects the price
- Which part failed and whether related parts are worn.
- The size, weight and construction of the door.
- Parts and hardware needed to make the repair safe.
- Access to the door and whether the visit is scheduled or urgent.

Questions about repairs
Can I tell what is wrong from a description?
A description helps us prepare, but the cause is confirmed at inspection. Similar symptoms can have different causes.
Is it safe to use the door while I wait?
If the door looks crooked, is off its track, or you have heard a loud bang, stop using it and keep people and vehicles clear.
What should I tell you when I call?
What the door is doing, when it started, any noises, and your ZIP code. Photos are not required.
Do you replace the whole door?
Replacement is covered on the new doors page.
